Brussels, 23 Feb. (LaPresse) – “I am not optimistic that we will see results in the coming weeks and months” in negotiations with Russia. This is what EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas said upon arriving at the Foreign Affairs Council. “Looking at the signals, I do not share the optimism” shown by U.S. envoy Witkoff, “because the negotiators on the Russian side are not very serious and are not willing to discuss anything political. We have seen a lot of pressure on Ukraine to concede and give up what it is not willing to give up. But this does not lead to long-term peace,” Kallas explained. “Tomorrow marks the fourth anniversary of this horrible war. Obviously, there will be a discussion on the twentieth sanctions package. I do not think there will be progress on this today, but we will certainly make the effort. So far, pressure has been applied to Ukraine regarding the peace talks, but it is clear that it must be applied to Russia because they are the aggressor in this war. And if we want this war to end, then we must also see concessions from Russia. This is very clear,” Kallas concluded.
