Milan, 12 April (LaPresse) – “I call on the government to preserve the “dignity” of our sovereign people. On Monday 13 April (tomorrow, ed.), the Memorandum on Italy-Israel military cooperation will be renewed for five years. It is an agreement that the Meloni government could have suspended at any time, but has not done so in recent years, just as it has not imposed serious sanctions on the Netanyahu government. But now, given that this is also a symbolic step, Italy has a specific duty to prevent the renewal of the Memorandum in order to respect the principles enshrined in our Constitution, in the European Charter of Fundamental Rights, and in the United Nations Charter.‘ This was written on Facebook by the president of the M5S, Giuseppe Conte. ’This is not a matter of political colours or ideological affinity. The Israeli government has been guilty of serious war crimes and crimes against humanity, committing genocide in Gaza, promoting abusive and even violent settlements in the West Bank, carrying out multiple armed attacks against other sovereign states that indiscriminately target the civilian population and infrastructure, and even attacking our peacekeepers’ vehicles. Netanyahu’s criminal conduct has resulted in thousands of deaths, conflicts and enormous economic damage, the burden of which is also borne by Italians. The call is to clearly distance ourselves from Netanyahu’s illegal conduct and thus join with other states in exerting pressure to isolate the Netanyahu government and force it to stop. These are patriotic choices. What do you think?”, concludes the former prime minister.
