Milan, 20 April (LaPresse/AP) – Formula 1 is set to change the way the new cars use electrical power, in an effort to make qualifying sessions more dynamic and reduce the risk of high-speed accidents during overtaking manoeuvres, all in time for next week’s Miami Grand Prix. The FIA, Formula 1’s governing body, has stated that the changes were agreed upon at a meeting with F1 teams, engine manufacturers and Formula One Management, following consultation with the drivers. The changes are subject to approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, a step that is usually a formality when changes enjoy broad consensus. F1’s increased emphasis on hybrid electric powertrains has drawn criticism from some drivers, who believe qualifying is too focused on strategic battery recharging and not sufficiently geared towards testing driving skill. A package of changes provides for faster charging at high speed and reduces the maximum amount of energy that can be recharged per lap. A key objective is to “reduce excessive energy draw and encourage more consistent, full-throttle driving”, the FIA said on Monday.
