US: Trump administration to reclassify medical marijuana

Washington (US), 22 April (LaPresse) – The Trump administration could proceed as early as today with the reclassification of marijuana, according to a source familiar with the matter who spoke to Axios. The reclassification would facilitate research into the therapeutic applications of marijuana. The reclassification of marijuana would ease the barriers imposed by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) on research into the drug’s potential uses. This would not lead to the immediate legalisation of marijuana, nor would it affect the sentences imposed on those currently imprisoned for offences related to possession of the substance. Axios notes that as early as last December, Trump had signed an executive order aimed at reclassifying the substance, instructing the Department of Justice to carry forward the initiative launched by President Biden to amend federal laws before the end of his term.
