Government, Schlein: ‘The right has stoked fears; now they are the ones who are frightening’

Rome, 26 Apr. (LaPresse) – “The left has made mistakes because at times it has forgotten what it is, who it is, and what it should stand for. But above all, I think the nationalist right has been very skilful at building support by stoking people’s fears. It has chosen the same enemies in different countries: those who are different, migrants, the LGBTI community, but it has failed to solve people’s real problems. They have brought war, inflation, recession, walls and tariffs. Now they are the ones who are frightening because they bring uncertainty and war.” So said the secretary of the PD, Elly Schlein, in an interview with El País. “People, on the other hand, are asking us for peace and tranquillity. The peace of mind of being able to receive treatment if they fall ill. Of having a decent job, with a wage that allows them to make ends meet. Of knowing that if their children go to state schools, they will have the tools for a better future. Trump has laid bare his main contradictions, which already existed, but are now evident. For years, this wave of right-wing nationalism seemed unstoppable. They are not invincible, but we will not defeat them on their own turf by copying their agenda. We will defeat them if we drag them into the terrain where they struggle most: the social and economic sphere of social justice. In this arena, they have demonstrated their resounding failure,” adds Schlein.
