Violence against women, Mattarella: “A cause for alarm and an emergency – the Republic must make a public commitment”

Rome, 17 Sept. (LaPresse) – “There are two reasons why I am here: the first is to highlight and bear witness to the ongoing cause for alarm – not merely concern, but alarm – and the commitment this requires in light of what is happening. The figures are alarmingly high: last year there were 97 femicides, and in the first half of this year there have already been 324. This is a public commitment on the part of the Republic.” So said the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, speaking at Grosseto Hospital after visiting the ‘Stanza Rosa’ (Pink Room) in the A&E department. “The issue of violence against women – and against anyone, for that matter – which was not previously given adequate attention, is an emergency of the utmost importance in the life of our country,” added the Head of State.
