Milan, 25 April (LaPresse) – “I have spoken with the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, and the Chief of Police, Vittorio Pisani. We briefly discussed the incident, aware that we were faced with something different from the past: a mass phenomenon of hostility and hatred towards that section of the march where the Jewish Brigade and Sinistra per Israele were present, which was very difficult to manage given its scale. Thousands of people wanted to prevent this procession from passing; I told the minister that we cannot allow such a thing because the right to demonstrate in Italy applies to everyone. I asked the minister to take a broad view of the matter; I believe we will meet in the coming days.” This is what Emanuele Fiano told LaPresse after meeting with Milan’s police chief Bruno Megale at the end of the 25 April march, during which the Jewish Brigade was forced to leave. “The Brigade was positioned at the head of the march to protect it from the problems of previous years, letting it set off first so as not to be squeezed between two groups as on other occasions. This was done to avoid problems, but none of us were prepared for such a level of hatred. It is not a phenomenon linked to the acronyms of social centres, and is therefore much more complicated to manage and deal with. It is very bitter news that translates into a major management challenge,” concluded Fiano.
