2026 World Cup: Belgium held to a draw in their opening match: 1-1 with Egypt

Milan, 15 June (LaPresse) – Belgium and Egypt shared the spoils in the opening match of Group G at the 2026 World Cup. The match in Seattle ends 1-1 after a closely contested game full of chances. The Egyptian side took the lead in the 19th minute when Ashour finished off a move orchestrated by Salah with a precise long-range shot that beat Courtois. The North Africans came close to doubling their lead before half-time, whilst Belgium struggled to create clear-cut chances. In the second half, Rudi Garcia’s side upped the tempo and equalised in the 66th minute. Lukaku’s introduction proved decisive, as his challenge on a cross from the right led to Hany deflecting the ball into his own net. In the closing stages, the Belgians pushed for the win, but were thwarted by Shobeir’s saves.
