Brussels, 21 April (LaPresse) – ‘As regards flight cancellations, I must clarify one point: the routes or flights that have been cancelled were not cancelled due to a lack of aviation fuel. They were cancelled because of high fuel prices and, as of today, we have no indication that there will be widespread cancellations in the aviation sector in the coming weeks or months’. This was stated by the EU Transport Commissioner, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, at a press conference following the informal video conference meeting of EU transport ministers. “Since the start of the crisis in the Middle East, aviation fuel prices have more than doubled, and this has prompted many airlines to reduce, or even cut, certain routes that made no financial sense. Routes that were on the verge of becoming profitable are no longer so, so the cancellation of routes or flights has nothing to do with the alleged shortage of aviation fuel,” the Greek politician clarified.
